How do cell phones work and why do they create harmful radiation?
Cell phones do not send signals directly to satellites as many would think. They transmit microwave signals to relay stations, or 'cell sites' which then bounce the signal up to the nearest satellite. These relay station towers can be up to 50 miles away, so the signal must be powerful enough to reach the relay station towers. Further, since telephone communication is two-way, the signal being transmitted is duplex, which means it is constantly transmitting microwave signals even when the user is listening and not talking.
