Arachidonic acid (an omega-6 fatty acid) is released from cell membranes upon stimulation and converted to prostaglandins and leukotrienes. Leukotrienes induce allergic hyper-reactivity. Perilla seed extract (very rich in α-linolenic acid, an important omega-3 fatty acid) inhibits the production ofleukotrienes. Human studies have shown that serum IgE levels are suppressed by administration of Perilla Seed Extract, and allergic rhinitis and hay fever were significantly improved in humans. These studies were considered preliminary, but they are illustrative.*
